Nestled in the charming streets of Shiogama, Ebiya Cafe Harema invites you to experience a delightful blend of nostalgia and tranquility. This quaint cafe, housed within a beautifully restored ryokan built in the late 1800s, serves as a perfect retreat for those seeking a peaceful atmosphere infused with a touch of history.

The moment you step inside, you're greeted by a warm ambiance accentuated by antique decor, including vintage ceramics and traditional kimonos adorning the walls. This is a space that exudes a sense of calm, ideal for unwinding with a book or simply enjoying the view of the quaint surroundings.

The menu at Ebiya Cafe Harema offers a variety of carefully curated dishes that highlight the essence of Japanese comfort food. One standout is the Oden and Onigiri set, as praised by one delighted customer, which perfectly balances savory flavors with hearty ingredients. The steaming, flavorful oden — a traditional Japanese winter dish — is paired beautifully with fluffy, hand-formed rice balls that transport you back to simpler times. Another customer mentions the delightful Shifon Cake, an absolute must-try for those with a sweet tooth, which adds a light, airy touch to your cafe experience.

The reactions from visitors speak volumes about the allure of this cafe. One customer describes it as "a comforting place," perfect for leisure and relaxation, while another enjoys the event held on the second floor, reminiscing about the numerous kimono-clad guests. Beyond the food, the charm of Ebiya Cafe Harema lies in its atmosphere — a refuge from the hustle and bustle, where you can indulge in delicious treats and take a moment to reflect.

While the cafe itself is a destination, don’t miss the opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Although parking is not available directly at the cafe, nearby coin parking facilities provide convenience for visitors. The lovely streets of Shiogama, rich in culture and history, offer a delightful backdrop for an afternoon of exploration before or after your visit.

In a world that often feels rushed, Ebiya Cafe Harema stands out as a serene oasis. Whether you’re a local or a traveler seeking a taste of authentic Japanese hospitality, this cafe promises an experience that nurtures both the body and soul. So, grab a friend or simply enjoy your own company with a cup of robust coffee served in charmingly repaired vintage cups. You won’t regret it!

This ryokan was built around 1870. There was a record that Shigenobu Okuma stayed during the 1876 Tohoku tour by Emperor Meiji. It was once damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake and could be demolished, but its historical value has been recognized, restored and preserved by local efforts. A three-story building with a cafe on the first floor and a museum on the second and third floors. The museum is run by a non-profit organization and is open only on weekends. The menu includes meals (sandwiches, curries, etc.), sweets, and drinks (coffee, tea, etc.). Gentle air is flowing so everyone can relax.
